Production research

Talent: This is what a voice over would cost - Emma J, female - £25 per hour. I am using a voice over artist in my documentary due to it being more effective for my audience to take in information as they observe teenage behaviour.

Finance: I will be attempting to obtain from the government due to the issues that i will be portraying are involved with society. Hopefully the government will come to understand that the documentary i will be producing is being aired to improve the lives for those who live in Banstead.

Suppliers:
  • Sony Video camera - £50 per day
  • Sound mixer and boom operator Mic - £25 per day
  • Lighting - £15 per day
  •  Avid Editing software and computer - £70
  • Memory cards for clip storage £20
  • Tripod - £11 per day
  • grip - £4 per day
  • Speakers - £110
  • Headphones - £15
  • Mac with imovie installed - £95 per day
This is the basic equipment i would need in order to successfully film my documentary. I would hire out the equipment because it is cheaper for the short run and is cost effective. Buying equipment is not needed due to myself only needing it once to shoot the documentary, reducing the cost of the equipment allows myself to put the money to other uses.

Facilities: The facilities i had at school were classes with editing software, also the school itself was a good facility due to the fact that teenagers could be accessed for the documentary. The school offered  the main roles of the documentary... teenagers. The school offered basic equipment as well as software, they offered Cannon Digital video cameras with memory, for my documentary however i realistically wanted it to be in high definition so its more comfortable for the audience to watch.

Locations: On google maps I've found the location i would choose would be:

  • Banstead park
  • Nork park
I believe these locations are where teenagers like to go in their free time to socialize. Both of the areas are quite open areas so i think it would be interesting for the audience to see how teenagers actually entertain themselves when there is no entertainment.

Logistical support: In order for the transportation to run smoothly i will be planning dates for van hire to transport my crew to and from places on the day of filming. This makes the crew more secure due to travelling together. I will be hiring a van from "icanhire.com".

Costs: The cost of equipment will be no more than 200 pounds.

The cast and crew will be working for free as them being my friends doing me a favor.

The costs are very low but still has the potential to be a successful documentary. I will be focusing on the quality of the content rather the quality of editing.

Viability :

Is my product financially viable?

My documentary, if i wanted it distributed in the TV industry, would not be viable. It would not be viable because to get commissioned by the BBC costs £40k - £300k. However if i was distributing my documentary online it would be a very small cost if not free. DVD would be £2k for a thousand copies so that would maybe be viable.

Do you have the necessary skills to undertake the production process?

I have basic skills of media production that consist of what would be needed to produce a documentary. I have successfully created an 'edit' and uploaded it to YouTube via imovie. However i do not have skills in certain aspects of production that is essential such as editing. In order to make the production process viable i would need to outsource someone who has the capability to work editing software, the software i would want for my documentary would be AVID due to it being one of the top software's for production. Also i would need too outsource voice over artist who have clear tone of voice to narrate the documentary.

Do you have the right equipment and technology available to you?

I have the right equipment and technology at The Beacon School. The equipment i can access is Video Cameras, tripods, editing software, sound equipment and lighting. Obtaining equipment for my documentary is very viable due to the resources i have in my surroundings.

What help and support will you require?

I will require the help and support of the school teachers to produce my documentary. They will give me the guidance i need in order to successfully produce a documentary. Help is very viable due to the resources i have in my surroundings. Also, i could get extra support through family and friends or more importantly, I can receive help from A-level media students that have had experience with production.

Have you got enough time to produce the product?

I feel like i have enough time to produce my documentary due to the resources i have in my surroundings. Due to living in an area where teenagers 'hang out' i can successfully find teenagers that can link to my documentary.

Placement:

  • The products that teenagers will consume in my documentary will be fast food such as Mc Donald's, KFC, Nandos and Subway.

  • They will consume technology such as I phones, Apple laptops and play stations.

  • Finally they will be consuming music that is gang related, Such as music by 67 and 86.
